You had it all. You know what to do. You knew what was expected of you. You delivered so often your nickname was FedEx. Then it all changed. Your boss retired/transferred/moved/got promoted, etc. Now you’ve got a new boss and your whole world got turned upside down.
Guess what? You’ve got this. You delivered because you know how to take care of business. You just have to help your know boss understand s/he can count on you.

Tip No. 1
Listen carefully. Make sure to keep your ears (and mind – see Tip No. 2) open, especially in the first few weeks you interact with your new boss. Take the time to absorb as much information as possible. Every manager has different priorities, different communication styles and different expectations. It’s up to you to listen and watch how your new manager handles things. Learn the things that impress her and you’re one your way to building a good rapport.
Tip No. 2
Keep an open mind. Start off on the right foot with your new boss by being open to his ideas and work style. He may have been brought on board to shake things up. Help him achieve his goals by implementing his plan. He has a vision. It’s your job to help it come to life.
Tip No. 3
Share institutional knowledge. If your new manager is new to the company, you can be an invaluable resource. Get her up to speed on history of projects. Share why things have been done a certain way. Help her avoid landmines whenever you can.
Tip No. 4
Take initiative. When a new boss comes on board, they are trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible. They are meeting new employees, learning the way things are done as an organization, setting priorities and getting ready to push new initiatives to meet the goals they’ve set (or been given). Find out what you can take off your boss’ plate right away. Take over tasks that you know how to do. Give him time and he’ll appreciate it and remember it.

Ask smart questions, offer intelligent answers. Knowing the right questions to ask can be invaluable to your new boss. Show her you know your stuff. Asking the right questions will help improve projects, streamline processes and achieve goals faster. Give thoughtful answers when your boss asks for your input. She’s trying to see how you think and if she can trust your instincts and knowledge.
